When the subject is intense and serious it’s better not to fill the movie with too many songs. Kurbaan is Karan Johar’s first attempt to produce a film on the subject of terrorism. Directed by Rensil D’Silva and starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, this film only has five originals and no fillers, just a remix.
The young, energetic duo of Salim and Sulieman has shown time and again what they are capable of. With ‘Kurbaan’ they have again proved it. The thought provoking lyrics of Prasoon Joshi are perfect for creating the soulful ambience as you hear the tracks.
Rasiya is a song that sounds very similar to O Saathi Re from Omkara and what a coincidence, both the songs are picturised on Kareena. Shruti Pathak’s voice carries a subdued intense tone for this pain-infused track.
The album shifts to a thanks-giving mode with the track Shukran Allah, a passionate love ballad in the voice of Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal, while Salim gets to sing the catchy Arabic lines. One hearing and you will also start swaying with the rhythm of the song and its sheer melody with no heavy use of beats and light musical arrangements.
The gloomy mood of the album continues with the track Ali Maula, which is like a prayer. The brooding music of the song continues to hover in your mind. Ali Maula remix is a pacy track but the song loses its essence in this version.
Don’t you think Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher make a terrific team? Of course, they do and that’s why the song Dua makes a remarkable qawwali. The high pitched voice of Sukhwinder is balanced with intense low pitched vocals of Kailash Kher. While Marianne D’Cruz’s English lines give it a western touch, making it fit for today’s generation who might not understand what a qawwali is.
The title track Kurbaan Hua is a rock number in the voice of Vishal Dadlani. It’s good that the composers didn’t try to use typical arrangements for this song like others but gave it a different treatment to avoid monotony. Kurbaan Hua has the feel of sacrifice, pain of loss, and a sense of impending doom. Thus rock music was best to express it.
The ‘Kurbaan’ songs are strictly according to the movie’s storyline. So the scope of creating melodies or zippy tunes lessens because of the theme of the movie. Nevertheless, music lovers won’t feel disappointed after hearing it. As I said, just one go and you will get into the ‘Kurbaan’ feel - solemn and somber.
Salim-Suleiman is back with a bang. Shukran Allah, music enthralls us at last.
